Data Heat Maps are data visualizations that create color-coded “maps” of student performance at the student expectation (SE) level of the TEKS.  The Data Heat Maps are designed to help campus leaders identify critical areas for teacher support and professional development.  The Data Heat Maps in Math, Science and Social Studies all contain four tabs:

  • SE and Perception Data – This worksheet contains a sequential listing of the SEs that comprise the Assessed Curriculum standards in STAAR.  This worksheet is designed for districts to enter SE level performance data for students, as well as teacher perception data ranking the Readiness Standards from hardest to easiest to teach (with 1 representing the hardest to teach).  Districts should also enter data regarding student performance at the Reporting Category level.  The student performance data can be from any assessment instrument (STAAR, TAKS, district benchmarks).  The specific assessment instruments being used should be named in the top row.  The default assessments identified are STAAR 2012 and TAKS 2011, but a district or campus can identify any assessment it wants to use.  The student performance data for each SE MUST be entered in “number” format with no decimal spaces (whole numbers only).  THIS IS THE ONLY TAB IN WHICH DATA SHOULD BE ENTERED.  ALL OTHER WORKSHEETS ARE POPULATED BASED ON THE DATA ENTERED IN THIS TAB.
  • Heat Map by Type – This worksheet presents the teacher perception and student performance SE level data organized by standard type (Readiness, Supporting, Process).  The data are color coded to reflect “hot” spots and “hotter” spots.  The color-coding is preset to identify “hot” spots with orange shading where student performance is less than or equal to 75% (and teacher perception is less than or equal to 2.5) and “hotter” spots with red shading where student performance is less than or equal to 66% (and teacher perception is less than or equal to 1.5).  District or campus leaders may customize this worksheet by changing the “cut points” for “hot” or “hotter” spots.
  • Heat Map by Reporting Category – This worksheet presents the teacher perception and student performance SE level data organized by Reporting Category.
  • Year-by-Units – This worksheet presents the teacher perception and student performance SE level data organized based on units of instruction for 2012-13.  This worksheet was developed at the request of an individual school district which is using CSCOPE as its curriculum in all content areas.  The school district has agreed to share the Year-by-Units heat mapping tool with other districts in Texas and this tool is posted with the district’s consent.

The Reading and Writing Heat Maps are constructed differently from the Heat Maps in Math, Science and Social Studies. Each Reading Heat Map has 3 tabs:

  • SE and Perception Data
  • Heat Map by Type
  • Heat Map by Reporting Category

Each Writing Heat Map contains a single tab.
