The Comprehension Reading Mat is a student instructional support resource to use with students before, during, and after reading. The role of each instructional practice is to provide students with tools to access and manage the texts they read. This resource is intended to be used with individuals or a small group of students to reinforce comprehension after teaching and practice.

The Comprehension Reading Mat is intended for student use, while the Comprehension Strategy Kit is a teacher resource. Questions that stimulate thinking and comprehension are similar in both resources, but the Comprehension Reading Mat puts the questions in student language.

This resource also includes:

  • Reading routines that can be used throughout the year to establish an effective literacy classroom
  • Read-aloud questions that promote student thinking, talking, and sharing
  • Before, during, and after reading questions, instructional practices, and evidence of learning for the practice and transfer of comprehension strategies

 

Comprehension Strategy Kit

The Comprehension Strategy Kit is an instructional resource for the introduction, practice, and ongoing implementation of critical comprehension strategies. The role of each instructional practice is to provide students tools to access and manage the texts they read, while at the same time promoting deeper reading. The Strategy Kit is intended to be used during shared and independent practice and supports the application and transfer of the reading process.

Reading routines are provided to be used throughout the year in order to establish an effective literacy classroom. Examples of essential questions are included to be adapted as the year progresses.

Read-aloud questions are to promote student thinking, talking, and sharing. A variety of organized discourse options are included to ensure variety during the read-aloud process.

A before, during, and after reading question is included for nine of the ten comprehension strategies. A before, during, and after reading instructional practice is provided for each strategy when appropriate. An evidence of learning activity is included for each of the ten comprehension strategies to provide a fast and focused formative assessment.
